Green Cove Springs is named after the portion of the St. Johns River upon which the city is built, where the river bends and the area is sheltered by trees that are perennially green. The area was first inhabited over 7,000 years ago by natives drawn by the warm mineral spring. The spring attracted guests in the 19th century and a dozen hotels were built near the spring. Today the sulfur-scented spring water feeds an adjacent public swimming pool before flowing the short distance to the St. Johns River.
Development of the area began in 1816 and the 1920s saw renewed development, with automobile traffic bringing in tourists again. Today it's a tranquil and peaceful community, with an approximate population of 7,000 residents. Notable places of interest in Green Cove Springs like the Clay County Historical Society Museum and the Military Museum of North Florida. Nearby Bayard Conservation Area features diverse wildlife, wide trails, river fishing, hunting and rustic camping sites.
